Laptop chargers guide

Choosing a charger is actually very easy if you follow a few important principles. Most of the chargers don't have the problem that they are only compatible with one computer model. Most can be used on computers from several manufacturers.

When choosing a charger, the most important thing is to find out the size of the charger plug, the voltage (V) required for charging and the current (A). Voltage and current determine the power of the charger –  V x A= W

If the connector fits your computer, it is important to ensure that the voltage is the same as specified by the manufacturer and that the current is equal to or greater to the current of Your old laptop charger. 

If we take a DELL laptop, for example, the current may be 3.34A and some 4.62A.

3,34A x 19,5V = 65W

4,62A x 19,5V = 90W

A laptop with an original 90W charger should be continued to charge with a 90W charger. The 90W charger can also be used with a laptop using a 65W charger, as it has enough power (the rest just overlaps). However, using a 65W charger with a 90W laptop is not recommended and in some cases not possible, as the computer understands that it is not a powerful enough.
However, it would be a good idea to make sure that you do not use a charger that is more than twice as powerful, ie. do not charge a 40W computer with a 90W+ charger, for example.

Connecting the wrong charger can damage the laptop, the charger and the laptop battery.

You can use the website search by entering your computer model or the charger model to find the right charger.

How do I find out the model number of my computer or charger?

The first option is to search for your laptop model number on your computer and use it in the search box in the upper right corner. The easiest way to find this information is on the bottom of the laptop. Voltage (V) and current (A) are usually written on the same label.

If the old charger is still available to check, the information can also be found there.

Sometimes the original labels are worn out and the markings can no longer be clarified. Then you can find the necessary information under the battery - remove the battery and you will find the necessary information on your computer.

You can also use the information on the computer itself. Open "System Information" - for example, from the Start menu - and see which model it is. For example, for Dell, the information is under "System Model" and for HP, "Product name."

How do I know the plug size?

Plug 5.5 x 2.5mm, voltage 19-20V

This is the most common charger plug and it can be said that 60% of laptops use this plug. Used on Ordi, Compaq, Acer, Toshiba laptops, for example, as well as on all Advent and Medion models and old HP models. Can have a 90 degree angle as well as a straight plug.

Plug 5.5 x 1.7mm, voltage 19-20V

Used primarily on newer Acer laptops as well as older Compaq models.

Plug 4.8 x 1.7mm, voltage 19V

Used primarily on all HP models manufactured from 2005-2010 and many Asus laptops.

Plug 7.4 x 5mm, voltage 19V

Dell laptop plug with a special terminal used to identify the charger. A lot of Dell charger problems are caused by the fact that this terminal has been damaged and the charger does not charge the computer's battery, but just keeps the computer running. As a result, the computer's battery capacity becomes so low that it can no longer be charged.

Used on Lenovo computers and most IBM laptops.

Dell Special, voltage 20V

A square special plug used on the first DELL models.

5.5 x 3.0mm, voltage 19V

Most Samsung laptops use this plug. Some models also use plugs with middle terminal.

6.5 x 4.4mm, voltage19.5V

Charger for Sony laptops.

6.5 x 4.4mm, voltage 16V

Sony charger for smaller laptops and tablets.

6.3 x 3.0mm, voltage15V

Older Toshiba models use this type of plug.
